Morality

In its "descriptive" sense, morality refers to personal or cultural values, codes of conduct or social mores that distinguish between right and wrong in the human society.
Describing morality in this way is not making a claim about what is objectively right or wrong, but only referring to what is considered right or wrong by an individual or some group of people (such as a religion).

Morality may simply be a kind of make-believe, a complex set of rules and recommendations that represents nothing real and is seen as a human creation.

Many religions provide moral guidelines for their followers. They believe that the divine has instructed them with a way to live and that following these rules will lead to good social structure, and closer communion with the divine.

Examples of moral codes include the Golden Rule; the Five Precepts and the Noble Eightfold Path of Buddhism (see Śīla); the ancient Egyptian code of Ma'at; the Ten Commandments of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam; Judaism's Noahide Law; and the yamas and niyama of the Hindu scriptures.

The philosophy of Niccolò Machiavelli is sometimes presented as a model of moral nihilism, but that is highly questionable. His book Il Principe (The Prince) was silent on moral matters, which shocked a European tradition that throughout the Middle Ages had inculcated moral lessons in its political philosophies. But silence about morality is not tantamount to outright nihilism. Machiavelli does say that the Prince must override moral reasons in favour of power-maintaining reasons of State, but he also says, particularly in his other works, that the successful ruler should be guided by Pagan, rather than Christian, virtues. Hence, Machiavelli presents an alternative to the ethical theories of his day, rather than an all-out rejection of all morality. Complicating the matter is the evidence that the whole of The Prince was written primarily to please the newly-princely Medici family and thus may have presented ideas contrary to Machiavelli's actual views, his actual opinions being represented in, among other things, the Discourses on Livy.

Good and Evil

In religion, ethics, and philosophy, the phrase, good and evil refers to the location on a two-way spectrum of objects, desires, or behaviors, the good direction being morally positive, and the evil direction morally negative.

Every language has a word expressing good in the sense of "having the right or desirable quality" (ἀρετή) and bad in the sense "undesirable". A sense of moral judgement and a distinction "right and wrong, good and bad" are cultural universals.

GOOD

-Being positive or desirable in nature

-Having the qualities that are desirable or distinguishing in a particular thing

-Serving the desired purpose or end

-Of high quality

-Worthy of respect

-Beneficial to health

-Of moral excellence; upright

-Benevolent; kind

-Well-behaved; obedient

-Socially correct; proper

-morally excellent; virtuous; righteous; pious

It is better to be beautiful than to be good, but it is better to be good than to be ugly.

Oscar Wilde

I Like this quote I dislike this quoteTrue religion is real living; living with all one's soul, with all one's goodness and righteousness.

The ideals which have always shone before me and filled me with the joy of living are goodness, beauty, and truth. To make a goal of comfort or happiness has never appealed to me; a system of ethics built on this basis would be sufficient only for a herd of cattle.

Albert Einstein

Goodness is the only investment that never fails.

All good things are wild, and free.

Henry David Thoreau

Virtue is bold, and goodness never fearful.

William Shakespeare

-It is easy to perform a good action, but not easy to acquire a settled habit of performing such actions.

Chinese Proverb

The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law (Galatians 5:22)

EVIL

e·vil  (vl)

Evil (also called badness or egregiousness) is the violation of some moral code.
Evil is usually seen as the opposite of good.

The Bible defines evil as the condition of being alone (the "not good" of Gen. 2:18). In this sense, evil may be seen as that which goes against, or is outside of society, both in terms of values and actions.

-----------------------------------
Even Martin Luther allowed that there are cases where a little evil is a positive good. He wrote, "Seek out the society of your boon companions, drink, play, talk bawdy, and amuse yourself. One must sometimes commit a sin out of hate and contempt for the Devil, so as not to give him the chance to make one scrupulous over mere nothings... ."

---------

In certain schools of political philosophy, leaders are encouraged to be indifferent to good or evil, taking actions based solely on practicality; this approach to politics was put forth by Niccolò Machiavelli, a 16th-century Florentine writer who advised politicians "...it is far safer to be feared than loved."

Machiavelli wrote: "...there will be traits considered good that, if followed, will lead to ruin, while other traits, considered vices which if practiced achieve security and well being for the Prince."

----------

According the general teachings of the Buddha, "evil" means "harmful" and refers to 1) the three selfish emotions—desire, hate and delusion; and 2) to their expression in physical and verbal actions.
See "ten unvirtuous actions in Buddhism". Specifically, "evil" means whatever harms or obstructs the causes for happiness in this life, a better rebirth, liberation from samsara, and the true and complete enlightenment of a buddha (samyaksambodhi).
Ignorance is defined as the root of all evil.

When choosing between two evils, I always like to try the one I've never tried before.

Mae West

He who passively accepts evil is as much involved in it as he who helps to perpetrate it. He who accepts evil without protesting against it is really cooperating with it.

Martin Luther King

He who does not punish evil commands it to be done.

Leonardo da Vinci

-The world is a dangerous place to live; not because of the people who are evil, but because of the people who don't do anything about it.

-I do not believe in the God of theology who rewards good and punishes evil.

Albert EinsteinAll that we are is the result of what we have thought. If a man speaks or acts with an evil thought, pain follows him. If a man speaks or acts with a pure thought, happiness follows him, like a shadow that never leaves him.

-There has to be evil so that good can prove its purity above it.

Buddha

The sun also shines on the wicked

Seneca

Hear no evil, speak no evil - and you'll never be invited to a party

Oscar Wilde

I am in politics because of the conflict between good and evil, and I believe that in the end good will triumph.
Margaret Thatcher

It may be necessary temporarily to accept a lesser evil, but one must never label a necessary evil as good.
Margaret Mead

It is a cursed evil to any man to become as absorbed in any subject as I am in mine.
Charles Darwin

People who say that money is the root of all evil don't have any

Anon

Those who forget good and evil and seek only to know the facts are more likely to achieve good than those who view the world through the distorting medium of their own desires.
Bertrand Russell

I live in sin, to kill myself I live; no longer my life my own, but sin's; my good is given to me by heaven, my evil by myself, by my free will, of which I am deprived.

John McAleese

'Most people have heard of some of my exploits, namely the Iranian Embassy, where I was...er...sort of captured on film as you might say, going in through the window-without being asked.'

'I've seen one or two things-some good, some not so good-but I like to think I came away a better person.'

SELECTION

'Selection is the initial process of keeping the good and getting rid of the bad.

'What they're trying to do is get rid of the guys early.
The way they do this is with physical and mental tests.'

'You have time limits, but they don't tell you what these are.'

'You're using your brain all the time, becuase you're actually learning to map-read everywhere you go.'

'They'll say,'Here's your grid-reference',and they'll you once normally-because it's all about remembering things aswell.'

'Providing you've done enough previous training before you go on Selection, you should be fit enough and tough enough to do it......hopefully-but it doesn't always work that way.'

'The idea, when you're being questioned(in interrogation),is to try and be the 'grey man',show no emotion.'

'You're trying not to antagonise them, you're trying to get a happy balance.'

'Hopefully,by this stage you've got the physical toughness-but it's the mental side they're playing on.'

'They're trying to get a reactyion out of you, they're trying to get you talking, they're trying to break barriers down.'

ROOM DRILLS

'When you do an assault on a room, there are 3 entry methods;you go through the door, through the window or through the wall.'

'If you do have a stoppage during a room combat with these weapons(MP5),you don't waste time changing magazines-you're actually going to go for your sidearm.'

IRANIAN EMBASSY SIEGE

'Prior to the actual assault going in-to be honest with you I've been asked this question a few times,'How did you feel, were you frightened?',and all the rest of it.
In all honesty-I think I can speak to everybody who was on the job-nobody,I could actually say,was frightened, because we were actually that engrossed in the snooker at the time-because there was the Embassy World Championships on the television at the time and everybody was too busy watching that.
You were....let's say, switched on to do the job when it kicked off,but to say that anybody was frightened,or over anxious-or even worried,I'd say,'No'.
You know, everybody's sort of cool,calm,collected....you knew what job you were going to be doing, you were highly trained, you were well motivated....you were working with a good team of lads-everybody trusted everybody else, you know....the job was well planned...there was nothing to worry about.
All we were waiting for was the start time-when the boss said,'It's time to go'.
And up till then, all the training had been done, you can only practice for so long.
We were just waiting for the magic words,'Standby,standby-go!'.
No problems,no worries.'

'You learn not to become to personalised with the individuals.
They are,let's say...an enemy.
You may know alot of personal details about them, but these are soon forgotten...it is just an enemy.
Because at the end of the day,it doesn't matter whatever job you are doing within the anti-terrorist....let's say....scenarios-they are a bad guy,you are a good guy.
They're trying to kill you or kill hostages, and you are in there to stop them, and if you have to kill them to stop them-that's what you do.
That's your job.'

'There are things that you do miss......not just like friends, old comrades-that sort of rubbish.
But in certain respects, you do miss....how can you say...the buzz..............You do say,'I wish I was there',just to get this little buzz and little bit of excitement.'

'I maintain that they(22 SAS)are the best-and anyone that disagrees,well basically they're fools.
They are the best, always have been the best-and they won't be topped.'

-Although the world is full of suffering, it is also full of the overcoming of it.

-Character cannot be developed in ease and quiet. Only through experience of trial and suffering can the soul be strengthened, ambition inspired, and success achieved.

-I am only one, but still I am one. I cannot do everything, but still I can do something; and because I cannot do everything, I will not refuse to do something that I can do.

-I long to accomplish a great and noble task, but it is my chief duty to accomplish small tasks as if they were great and noble.

-It is for us to pray not for tasks equal to our powers, but for powers equal to our tasks, to go forward with a great desire forever beating at the door of our hearts as we travel toward our distant goal.

-Keep your face to the sunshine and you cannot see a shadow.

-Many people know so little about what is beyond their short range of experience. They look within themselves - and find nothing! Therefore they conclude that there is nothing outside themselves either.

-Many persons have a wrong idea of what constitutes true happiness. It is not attained through self-gratification but through fidelity to a worthy purpose.

-No pessimist ever discovered the secret of the stars, or sailed to an uncharted land, or opened a new doorway for the human spirit.

-Security is mostly a superstition. It does not exist in nature, nor do the children of men as a whole experience it. Avoiding danger is no safer in the long run than outright exposure. Life is either a daring adventure, or nothing.

IF.....

IF you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too;
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or being lied about, don't deal in lies,
Or being hated, don't give way to hating,
And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise:
If you can dream - and not make dreams your master;
If you can think - and not make thoughts your aim;
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
And treat those two impostors just the same;
If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,
And stoop and build 'em up with worn-out tools:

If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings
And never breathe a word about your loss;
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the Will which says to them: 'Hold on!'

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
' Or walk with Kings - nor lose the common touch,
if neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you,
If all men count with you, but none too much;
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds' worth of distance run,
Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,
And - which is more - you'll be a Man, my son!"

John le Carre

-A spy, like a writer, lives outside the mainstream population. He steals his experience through bribes and reconstructs it.

-History keeps her secrets longer than most of us. But she has one secret that I will reveal to you tonight in the greatest confidence. Sometimes there are no winners at all. And sometimes nobody needs to lose.

-In every war zone that I've been in, there has been a reality and then there has been the public perception of why the war was being fought. In every crisis, the issues have been far more complex than the public has been allowed to know.

-Most people like to read about intrigue and spies. I hope to provide a metaphor for the average reader's daily life. Most of us live in a slightly conspiratorial relationship with our employer and perhaps with our marriage.

-We have learned in recent years to translate almost all of political life in terms of conspiracy. And the spy novel, as never before, really, has come into its own.

-When you're my age and you see a story, you better go for it pretty quickly. I'd just like to get a few more novels under my belt.

''Graham Greene once referred to a chip of ice that has to be in the writer's heart. And that is the strain: that you must abstain from relationships and yet at the same time engage in them. There you have, I think, the real metaphysical relationship between the writer and the spy."

Graham Greene

-A petty reason perhaps why novelists more and more try to keep a distance from journalists is that novelists are trying to write the truth and journalists are trying to write fiction.

-God created a number of possibilities in case some of his prototypes failed - that is the meaning of evolution.

-If you have abandoned one faith, do not abandon all faith. There is always an alternative to the faith we lose. Or is it the same faith under another mask?

-In human relationships, kindness and lies are worth a thousand truths.

-Nobody thinks in terms of human beings. Governments don't, why should we? They talk about people and the proletariat; I talk about the suckers and the mugs. It's the same thing.

-The great advantage of being a writer is that you can spy on people. You're there, listening to every word, but part of you is observing. Everything is useful to a writer, you see - every scrap, even the longest and most boring of luncheon parties.

-The truth has never been of any real value to any human being - it is a symbol for mathematicians and philosophers to pursue. In human relations kindness and lies are worth a thousand truths.

-We are all of us resigned to death: it's life we aren't resigned to.

"I don't care a damn about men who are loyal to the people who pay them, to organizations...I don't think even my country means all that much. Jigoro Kano

-If there is effort, there is always accomplishment.

-In randori we learn to employ the principle of maximum efficiency even when we could easily overpower an opponent. Indeed, it is much more impressive to beat an opponent with proper technique than with brute force. This lesson is equally applicable in daily life: the student realized persuasion backed up by sound logic is ultimately more effective than coercion.

-Another tenet of randori is to apply just the right amount of force — never too much, never too little. All of us know of people who have failed to accomplish what they set out to do because of not properly gauging the amount of effort required. At one extreme, they fall short of the mark; at the other, they do not know when to stop.

-There are people who are excitable by nature and allow themselves to become angry for the most trivial of reasons. Judo can help such people learn to control themselves. Through training, they quickly realize that anger is a waste of energy, that it has only negative effects on the self and others.

-Judo teaches us to look for the best possible course of action, whatever the individual circumstances, and helps us to understand that worry is a waste of energy. Paradoxically, the man who has failed and one who is at the peak of success are in exactly the same position. Each must decide what he will do next, choose the course that will lead him to the future. The teachings of judo give each the same potential for success, in the former instance guiding a man out of lethargy and disappointment to a state of vigorous activity.

-Walk a single path, becoming neither cocky with victory nor broken with defeat, without forgetting caution when all is quiet or becoming frightened when danger threatens.

Jigoro Kano's Five Principles of Judo:

1. Carefully observe oneself and one's situation, carefully observe others, and carefully observe one's environment.

2. Seize the initiative in whatever you undertake.

3. Consider fully, act decisively.

4. Know when to stop.

5. Keep to the middle.

-Hard work has made it easy. That is my secret. That is why I win.

-I believe that you should gravitate to people who are doing productive and positive things with their lives.

-I don't run away from a challenge because I am afraid. Instead, I run toward it because the only way to escape fear is to trample it beneath your feet.

-You should also appreciate the goodness around you, and surround yourself with positive people.

Michael Phelps

Michael Phelps, an Olympic champion from the United States in swimming sports. Michael Phelps is a living legend of swimming world and Olympic. He holds a record as the gold medalist in the Olympics, 8 Olympic gold in Beijing in 2008. He also holds a record of the most winning of Olympic gold medal ever in the history of Olympics, ie a total of 14 gold (8 gold in 2008 and 6 gold in 2004). Those achievements are clearly a phenomenal achievement. His superiority in swimming sports, especially in butterfly numbers, almost without a rival. Of course that great achievements can not be achieved easily. Requires great effort and great sacrifice.
The following is motivational words of Michael Phelps, who hopefully can motivate you to strive tirelessly to achieve goals. Good luck.

-I think that everything is possible as long as you put your mind to it and you put the work and time into it. I think your mind really controls everything.
-I want to be able to look back and say, 'I've done everything I can, and I was successful.' I don't want to look back and say I should have done this or that. I'd like to change things for the younger generation of swimmers coming along.
-I want to test my maximum and see how much I can do. And I want to change the world of swimming.
-If I didn't swim my best, I'd think about it at school, at dinner, with my friends. It would drive me crazy.
-You can't put a limit on anything. The more you dream, the farther you get.
-I have the opportunity to be part of swimming history. To take the sport to a new level would be an honor for me. There`s no better time to try this than now.

-I`ve always been fortunate in that I`ve been able to put myself in my own zone and relax. It comes naturally. I`m lucky to be that way.

T.E.Lawrence

T.E. Lawrence

-All men dream: but not equally. Those who dream by night in the dusty recesses of their minds wake in the day to find that it was vanity: but the dreamers of the day are dangerous men, for they may act their dreams with open eyes, to make it possible. This I did.

-“on the whole I prefer lies to truth particularly where they concern me.”

  • With two thousand years of examples behind us, we have no excuses when fighting for not fighting well.

  • 'You wonder what I am doing? Well, so do I, in truth. Days seem to dawn, suns to shine, evenings to follow, and then I sleep. What I have done, what I am doing, what I am going to do, puzzle and bewilder me. Have you ever been a leaf and fallen from your tree in autumn and been really puzzled about it? That's the feeling.'

-I've been & am absurdly over-estimated. There are no supermen & I'm quite ordinary, & will say so whatever the artistic results. In that point I'm one of the few people who tell the truth about myself.

  • Do not try to do too much with your own hands. Better the Arabs do it tolerably than that you do it perfectly. It is their war, and you are to help them, not to win it for them. Actually, also, under the very odd conditions of Arabia, your practical work will not be as good as, perhaps, you think it is.

  • ...but suppose we were an influence (as we might be), an idea, a thing invulnerable, intangible, without front or back, drifting about like a gas? Armies were like plants, immobile as a whole, firm-rooted, nourished through long stems to the head, we might be a vapour, blowing where we listed. Our kingdoms lay in each man's mind, as we wanted nothing material to live on, so perhaps we offered nothing material to the killing. It seemed a regular soldier might be helpless without a target. He would own the ground he sat on, and what he could poke his rifle at.

  • -Nine-tenths of tactics are certain, and taught in books: but the irrational tenth is like the kingfisher flashing across the pool, and that is the test of generals. It can only be ensured by instinct, sharpened by thought practising the stroke so often that at the crisis it is as natural as a reflex.

The world feels not without a certain apprehension, that here is some one outside its jurisdiction; someone before whom its allurements may be spread in vain; some one strangely enfranchised, untamed, untrammelled by convention, moving independent of the ordinary currents of human action.

    Aristoteles Onassis

-«No veo ningún dios aquí arriba...»

    Astronautas
