Morality

In its "descriptive" sense, morality refers to personal or cultural values, codes of conduct or social mores that distinguish between right and wrong in the human society.
Describing morality in this way is not making a claim about what is objectively right or wrong, but only referring to what is considered right or wrong by an individual or some group of people (such as a religion).

Morality may simply be a kind of make-believe, a complex set of rules and recommendations that represents nothing real and is seen as a human creation.

Many religions provide moral guidelines for their followers. They believe that the divine has instructed them with a way to live and that following these rules will lead to good social structure, and closer communion with the divine.

Examples of moral codes include the Golden Rule; the Five Precepts and the Noble Eightfold Path of Buddhism (see Śīla); the ancient Egyptian code of Ma'at; the Ten Commandments of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam; Judaism's Noahide Law; and the yamas and niyama of the Hindu scriptures.

The philosophy of Niccolò Machiavelli is sometimes presented as a model of moral nihilism, but that is highly questionable. His book Il Principe (The Prince) was silent on moral matters, which shocked a European tradition that throughout the Middle Ages had inculcated moral lessons in its political philosophies. But silence about morality is not tantamount to outright nihilism. Machiavelli does say that the Prince must override moral reasons in favour of power-maintaining reasons of State, but he also says, particularly in his other works, that the successful ruler should be guided by Pagan, rather than Christian, virtues. Hence, Machiavelli presents an alternative to the ethical theories of his day, rather than an all-out rejection of all morality. Complicating the matter is the evidence that the whole of The Prince was written primarily to please the newly-princely Medici family and thus may have presented ideas contrary to Machiavelli's actual views, his actual opinions being represented in, among other things, the Discourses on Livy.

Good and Evil

In religion, ethics, and philosophy, the phrase, good and evil refers to the location on a two-way spectrum of objects, desires, or behaviors, the good direction being morally positive, and the evil direction morally negative.

Every language has a word expressing good in the sense of "having the right or desirable quality" (ἀρετή) and bad in the sense "undesirable". A sense of moral judgement and a distinction "right and wrong, good and bad" are cultural universals.

GOOD

-Being positive or desirable in nature

-Having the qualities that are desirable or distinguishing in a particular thing

-Serving the desired purpose or end

-Of high quality

-Worthy of respect

-Beneficial to health

-Of moral excellence; upright

-Benevolent; kind

-Well-behaved; obedient

-Socially correct; proper

-morally excellent; virtuous; righteous; pious

It is better to be beautiful than to be good, but it is better to be good than to be ugly.

Oscar Wilde

I Like this quote I dislike this quoteTrue religion is real living; living with all one's soul, with all one's goodness and righteousness.

The ideals which have always shone before me and filled me with the joy of living are goodness, beauty, and truth. To make a goal of comfort or happiness has never appealed to me; a system of ethics built on this basis would be sufficient only for a herd of cattle.

Albert Einstein

It is very wearing to be good

Mark Twain

Goodness is the only investment that never fails.

All good things are wild, and free.

Henry David Thoreau

Virtue is bold, and goodness never fearful.

William Shakespeare

-It is easy to perform a good action, but not easy to acquire a settled habit of performing such actions.

Aristotle

It is not what they profess but what they practice that makes them good

Greek proverb.

'There are two perfectly good men, one dead, and the other unborn.'

Chinese Proverb

The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law (Galatians 5:22)

EVIL

e·vil  (vl)

Evil (also called badness or egregiousness) is the violation of some moral code.
Evil is usually seen as the opposite of good.

The Bible defines evil as the condition of being alone (the "not good" of Gen. 2:18). In this sense, evil may be seen as that which goes against, or is outside of society, both in terms of values and actions.

-----------------------------------
Even Martin Luther allowed that there are cases where a little evil is a positive good. He wrote, "Seek out the society of your boon companions, drink, play, talk bawdy, and amuse yourself. One must sometimes commit a sin out of hate and contempt for the Devil, so as not to give him the chance to make one scrupulous over mere nothings... ."

---------

In certain schools of political philosophy, leaders are encouraged to be indifferent to good or evil, taking actions based solely on practicality; this approach to politics was put forth by Niccolò Machiavelli, a 16th-century Florentine writer who advised politicians "...it is far safer to be feared than loved."

Machiavelli wrote: "...there will be traits considered good that, if followed, will lead to ruin, while other traits, considered vices which if practiced achieve security and well being for the Prince."

----------

According the general teachings of the Buddha, "evil" means "harmful" and refers to 1) the three selfish emotions—desire, hate and delusion; and 2) to their expression in physical and verbal actions.
See "ten unvirtuous actions in Buddhism". Specifically, "evil" means whatever harms or obstructs the causes for happiness in this life, a better rebirth, liberation from samsara, and the true and complete enlightenment of a buddha (samyaksambodhi).
Ignorance is defined as the root of all evil.

When choosing between two evils, I always like to try the one I've never tried before.

Mae West

He who passively accepts evil is as much involved in it as he who helps to perpetrate it. He who accepts evil without protesting against it is really cooperating with it.

Martin Luther King

He who does not punish evil commands it to be done.

Leonardo da Vinci

-The world is a dangerous place to live; not because of the people who are evil, but because of the people who don't do anything about it.

-I do not believe in the God of theology who rewards good and punishes evil.

Albert EinsteinAll that we are is the result of what we have thought. If a man speaks or acts with an evil thought, pain follows him. If a man speaks or acts with a pure thought, happiness follows him, like a shadow that never leaves him.

-There has to be evil so that good can prove its purity above it.

Buddha

The sun also shines on the wicked

Seneca

Hear no evil, speak no evil - and you'll never be invited to a party

Oscar Wilde

I Like this quote I dislike this quoteThere is only one good, knowledge, and one evil, ignorance

Socrates

Shall I tell you what the real evil is? To cringe to the things that are called evils, to surrender to them our freedom, in defiance of which we ought to face any suffering.

Socrates

War is evil, but it is often the lesser evil

George Orwell

The penalty good men pay for indifference to public affairs is to be ruled by evil men

-No evil can happen to a good man, either in life or after death.

-Knowledge becomes evil if the aim be not virtuous.

Plato

-No man is justified in doing evil on the ground of expedience.

Thedore Roosevelt

I do not concern myself with gods and spirits either good or evil nor do I serve any.
Lao Tzu

Hatred is gained as much by good works as by evil.
Niccolo Machiavelli

I am in politics because of the conflict between good and evil, and I believe that in the end good will triumph.
Margaret Thatcher

It may be necessary temporarily to accept a lesser evil, but one must never label a necessary evil as good.
Margaret Mead

It is a cursed evil to any man to become as absorbed in any subject as I am in mine.
Charles Darwin

People who say that money is the root of all evil don't have any

Anon

Those who forget good and evil and seek only to know the facts are more likely to achieve good than those who view the world through the distorting medium of their own desires.
Bertrand Russell

I live in sin, to kill myself I live; no longer my life my own, but sin's; my good is given to me by heaven, my evil by myself, by my free will, of which I am deprived.
Michelangelo

John McAleese

'Most people have heard of some of my exploits, namely the Iranian Embassy, where I was...er...sort of captured on film as you might say, going in through the window-without being asked.'

'I've seen one or two things-some good, some not so good-but I like to think I came away a better person.'

SELECTION

'Selection is the initial process of keeping the good and getting rid of the bad.

'What they're trying to do is get rid of the guys early.
The way they do this is with physical and mental tests.'

'You have time limits, but they don't tell you what these are.'

'You're using your brain all the time, becuase you're actually learning to map-read everywhere you go.'

'They'll say,'Here's your grid-reference',and they'll you once normally-because it's all about remembering things aswell.'

'Providing you've done enough previous training before you go on Selection, you should be fit enough and tough enough to do it......hopefully-but it doesn't always work that way.'

'The idea, when you're being questioned(in interrogation),is to try and be the 'grey man',show no emotion.'

'You're trying not to antagonise them, you're trying to get a happy balance.'

'Hopefully,by this stage you've got the physical toughness-but it's the mental side they're playing on.'

'They're trying to get a reactyion out of you, they're trying to get you talking, they're trying to break barriers down.'

ROOM DRILLS

'When you do an assault on a room, there are 3 entry methods;you go through the door, through the window or through the wall.'

'If you do have a stoppage during a room combat with these weapons(MP5),you don't waste time changing magazines-you're actually going to go for your sidearm.'

IRANIAN EMBASSY SIEGE

'Prior to the actual assault going in-to be honest with you I've been asked this question a few times,'How did you feel, were you frightened?',and all the rest of it.
In all honesty-I think I can speak to everybody who was on the job-nobody,I could actually say,was frightened, because we were actually that engrossed in the snooker at the time-because there was the Embassy World Championships on the television at the time and everybody was too busy watching that.
You were....let's say, switched on to do the job when it kicked off,but to say that anybody was frightened,or over anxious-or even worried,I'd say,'No'.
You know, everybody's sort of cool,calm,collected....you knew what job you were going to be doing, you were highly trained, you were well motivated....you were working with a good team of lads-everybody trusted everybody else, you know....the job was well planned...there was nothing to worry about.
All we were waiting for was the start time-when the boss said,'It's time to go'.
And up till then, all the training had been done, you can only practice for so long.
We were just waiting for the magic words,'Standby,standby-go!'.
No problems,no worries.'

'You learn not to become to personalised with the individuals.
They are,let's say...an enemy.
You may know alot of personal details about them, but these are soon forgotten...it is just an enemy.
Because at the end of the day,it doesn't matter whatever job you are doing within the anti-terrorist....let's say....scenarios-they are a bad guy,you are a good guy.
They're trying to kill you or kill hostages, and you are in there to stop them, and if you have to kill them to stop them-that's what you do.
That's your job.'

'There are things that you do miss......not just like friends, old comrades-that sort of rubbish.
But in certain respects, you do miss....how can you say...the buzz..............You do say,'I wish I was there',just to get this little buzz and little bit of excitement.'

'I maintain that they(22 SAS)are the best-and anyone that disagrees,well basically they're fools.
They are the best, always have been the best-and they won't be topped.'

Helen Keller

-Although the world is full of suffering, it is also full of the overcoming of it.

-Character cannot be developed in ease and quiet. Only through experience of trial and suffering can the soul be strengthened, ambition inspired, and success achieved.

-I am only one, but still I am one. I cannot do everything, but still I can do something; and because I cannot do everything, I will not refuse to do something that I can do.

-I long to accomplish a great and noble task, but it is my chief duty to accomplish small tasks as if they were great and noble.

-It is for us to pray not for tasks equal to our powers, but for powers equal to our tasks, to go forward with a great desire forever beating at the door of our hearts as we travel toward our distant goal.

-Keep your face to the sunshine and you cannot see a shadow.

-Many people know so little about what is beyond their short range of experience. They look within themselves - and find nothing! Therefore they conclude that there is nothing outside themselves either.

-Many persons have a wrong idea of what constitutes true happiness. It is not attained through self-gratification but through fidelity to a worthy purpose.

-No pessimist ever discovered the secret of the stars, or sailed to an uncharted land, or opened a new doorway for the human spirit.

-Security is mostly a superstition. It does not exist in nature, nor do the children of men as a whole experience it. Avoiding danger is no safer in the long run than outright exposure. Life is either a daring adventure, or nothing.
